Professional Focus Dr. Daniel Mass is double board certified in Orthopaedic Surgery and Surgery of the Hand specializing in hands, upper extremities, and reconstructive surgery to repair complex fractures. Dr. Mass's medical interests include adult and pediatric hand and wrist injuries, flexor tendon injuries, orthotic and surgical management of the distal radioulnar joints in adults, and minimally invasive techniques for hand and wrist microsurgeries.

After graduating Phi Beta Kappa and receiving his undergraduate degree from the University of Chicago, Dr. Mass earned his medical degree from the Pritzker School of Medicine. He completed a surgical internship and a residency in Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Chicago Hospitals and Clinics. He then completed two fellowships in Hand Surgery under the training of the renowned Eugene Kilgore MD and William Newmeyer MD as well as a Hand and Trauma Fellowship in Switzerland.

Currently, Dr. Mass is an Orthopaedic Surgeon for UI Health. He also serves as a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Illinois. Prior to his current appointments, Dr. Mass served as the Director of the Orthopedic Hand and Microsurgery Fellowship Program, a Professor of Orthopedic Surgery and Rehabilitation Medicine, and an Orthopedic Hand Surgeon at The University of Chicago Medicine.

Dr. Mass's research has focused on flexor tendon injuries (injuries to the muscles that allow the fingers to bend and flex) and the study of the mechanics of the hand, wrist, and elbow. He has studied and written numerous research publications, co-authored 2 books and 13 book chapters, and has been awarded over 10 research grants relating to his specialty. Dr. Mass is a Consultant Reviewer for the Journal of Hand Surgery and the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.
